Celebrating the Jewel of the Jersey Shore- The Flanders Hotel

Ocean City's Flanders Hotel was alive with excitement Sunday for the 90th Anniversary Gala. 300 were in attendance for the Roaring Twenties soiree close to the number that were on hand for the original opening in 1923.

The delicious menu was based on the opening night menu from 1923 prepared by Chef Blake Young, son of Rich and Sue Shipp Young and included Beef consommé, Rockfish, Filet of sirloin, & Chocolate Mousee, as well as pastries from Blue Dolfin Sweets.

The event was sponsored by the Flanders Condo Association and the Ocean City Historical Museum. A brief history of the hotel was presented by Peter Voudouris from the Flanders Condo Assoc and prizes were awarded for the Best Dressed Costumes from the Roaring 20s. Noel Wirth won for best ladies costume and Mike Columbo won for his vintage bathing suit.

As we entered the red carpet we got to take photos with Vintage Antique cars on display. We had a great time catching up with many local business friends while we enjoyed amazing hors d'oeuvres including Beef Wellington and Bacon wrapped scallops.

Elwood Kirkman owned the hotel until his death in 1993 and James Dwyer bought the hotel in 1996. After many financial challenges the hotel is now owned by the Flanders Condo Association. The landmark is on the National Registry of Historic Places.

The Cape May County Clerk Rita Fulginiti presented the Association with the original Deed to the Flanders.

Some personal memories. We have enjoyed many wonderful memories of the Flanders Hotel including swimming lessons in the saltwater pool in the 60s. It was so exciting to see people dive from the high dive back then.

In 1973 we attended Ocean City High School's Senior Prom at the Flanders.  Our wedding reception was held in the Plate Room. The hotel hosted my Dad, Joel Mott's, retirement party, my sister's wedding reception, a church retreat in 2012 with Good Samaritan Church from Paoli PA

and most recently this summer a wonderful High Tea. (Now held the first Thursday of each month. Call 399-1000 for more info)

We also had a blast at our 40th Class Reunion June 1, 2013 and have fond memories of the Charity League's Christmas Mart and many Chamber of Commerce and political events over the years.

We are grateful for all those who have sacrificed to keep this Grand Dame alive. May we all be here for the 100th Anniversary in 2023!

That's Italian! Andrea Trattoria in Sea Isle

Andrea Trattoria in Sea Isle offers a fantastic menu in a cozy corner along the Fish Alley section of Sea Isle not far from the bridge. The quaint trattoria offers delicious Italian cuisine prepared to accomodate a low sodium diet. The staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable.

Our meal started with incredible fried oysters with a tasty sauce. Next fresh bread, olive oil and antipasto were enjoyed with a nice glass of wine. BYOB

The Italian food options include fresh pasta and risotto of the day, fish, veal, chicken and daily specials. Everyone was pleased with their choices.

Linguini with crab, tomato & garlic

Bronzino filleted at the table.

Veal Parmigiana

top: Risotto with shrimp, clams, & crab

Dessert topped off the meal with Tira Misu

and Molton Lava Cake.

We found this restaurant by googling restaurants with low sodium diets for a family member. We have been very pleased to find a place that understands how high sodium food is not always the best choice.

BYOB Call for their winter hours. 263-5001
