Escape to Debra’s Daydream Café
Recently we spent a quiet, leisurely winter afternoon at
Debra’s Daydream Café in Tuckerton. Debra’s is inside a great indoor emporium
of great gifts, antiques and historical art work by Cathleen Engelsen. The café
is in the front of the shop that used to be Gerber’s Department Store in
yesteryear. The café looks out on Rt. 9 and you get a great view of the lake. I
have an old video of Tuckerton that shows when the lake flowed over Route 9, as
well as my great grandfather walking down the street in the 1940s, a gift from our
cousin Lincoln Mott. I love to return to Tuckerton, home of the Tuckerton
Seaport and the many cemeteries where early inhabitants are buried including
many of my ancestors; the Motts, Falkinburgs and Allens. At the Seaport you can learn about the life of
the baymen, decoy carvers and early life of the area.
We started our lunch with a crock of French Onion Soup
topped with browned cheeses and toast (left). Delicious! I had some hot cider rimmed with cinnamon
sugar. My husband enjoyed some hot
chocolate. For the main course I enjoyed the spinach quiche and mixed green
salad with blue cheese dressing (right). The quiche was tasty but undersalted; a trend
I am seeing more and more. Homemade jumbo lump crab cake was served with a
mixed green salad as well. Marvelous!
We were delighted with our desserts; the bread pudding (top) was
stunning with a delicious custard taste in a martini glass and hot brownie with
ice cream (left) and whipped cream was very satisfying to my “chocolate lover”
husband. A pot of French vanilla tea was a perfect way to finish this comfort
Starting this summer the Café will offer boat cruises out to
the bay. Talk to Debra about a special party menu for private parties. The café
would be a great place for your next private party, shower or a get together
with friends. Give Debra a call for details. The food is fantastic, the service
friendly and you will find a charming ambiance.
There will be a Spring Fashion Show on Sat. April 19 from
6:30 – 9:30 pm for $20. Why not make it a night out for the ladies?
